What does File Encryption mean?

File encryption means that you use an encryption algorithm to protect your secret information. The algorithm together with a secret key scrambles your information so that it is impossible for anyone to read that does not have the right key. Often this secret key is a password in the most common applications. The longer the key, the more difficult it is to crack the encryption. Therefore it is important that you chose a password that is long and also consists of many different types of characters. All to protect your self in the best possible way.

Why do I need file encryption?

All personal information or confidential work material that you have on your computer should be protected. Everyone that can get access can read what is stored on your computer if you lack any protection. It is easy to forget a laptop behind that could contain sensitive information. At work, a lot of people pass by your computer and it is difficult to keep track of everyone. If you use your computer on the Internet you can always be the subject for an attack where someone could get access to your information without having to even touch your computer.

This is why it is so important to have a complete protection. Encrypt you e-mails, use a firewall and encrypt your files. The best thing for protecting your files is to use a program that encrypts your entire hard disc from anyone else but yourself to access your information. Hard disc encryption however is a more complicated solution and requires further advice.

Do not forget to erase deleted files properly!
